Communicating Research across Disciplines
In a multi-disciplinary scholarly environment, communication between fields is increasingly important for extending the reach and effectiveness of research dissemination, collaboration and impact.
Interdisciplinary scholarship is promoted and enhanced by improving mutual understanding across academic disciplines, while trans-disciplinary collaboration relies entirely on effective communication between researchers from different fields. This requires the ability to frame and articulate your research in a way that is accessible, engaging and targeted beyond your own specialism. Achieving effective communication is also highly beneficial to clarity of thought: learning to present your research convincingly and persuasively for others is often a route to improving your own understanding in a wider context, as well as laying the ground for collaboration. The benefits of intellectual cross-fertilisation serve not only to augment our knowledge, insights and methods, but also to enrich the social dimension of research, while providing career-critical skills and experience.
This intensive one-day workshop is designed to help researchers reflect critically on how to address these needs, develop the necessary communication skills and begin to put them into practice. Participants work together to develop clear, concise and powerful ways to convey the essence of their research to colleagues in other fields.

‘I found the joy in my research again.’
‘You have a lot of brilliant ideas about your project but don’t know how to explain them to your peers in a structured way, and don’t know where to start writing? You will be on fire right here in this workshop!’
‘Absolutely recommended. Well structured and organized. I enjoyed the tempo and style of this workshop very much. Good combination of oral communication training and ‘quickfire’ writing. I also liked working in pairs, and had very good feedback from my peers. I will use these communication strategies in seminars and conferences.’
‘Through the exchange with other researchers in different disciplines and the structured course layout I have learned a lot about my own research project. Very helpful, even in the last year of my PhD.’
‘The toolbox and clear structure were great. Very nice atmosphere.’
